Planting Information

Dahlias dazzle in a rainbow of forms - pom-poms, dinnerplates, cactus, and more - with heights from 30cm to 1.5m.

Tubers planted in Spring will reward you with bold, vibrant blooms from summer through autumn, growing stronger each season.

Dahlias thrive in warm climates but need a chill to sprout reliably. In frost-free areas, pop tubers in the fridge for 4–6 weeks before planting.

Plant tubers on arrival in Spring (after last frost).

Choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Dig a hole 15cm deep x 30cm wide. Mix in compost, lay the tuber horizontally with the eye facing up, cover lightly (eye 5cm below soil), and water gently. Space 40–60cm apart.

Dahlias love slightly acidic to neutral soil (pH 6.5–7.0).

Feed monthly with balanced fertiliser from shoots appearing until flowering. Water deeply but infrequently; mulch to retain moisture.

Pinch out tips at 30cm tall for bushier plants. Stake tall varieties early. Lift tubers after first frost, dry, and store cool (5–10°C) over winter. Divide every 2–3 years in spring to refresh.

Dahlias grow beautifully in large pots with excellent drainage - perfect for patios.

When to plant in Your Climate

Temperate (e.g. Sydney, Adelaide): August–October.
Sub-Tropical (e.g. Brisbane): March–May or August–September
